Press Release

Road Department Equipped and Ready for the Snow!

December 19, 2007

SHELBYVILLE, Ky.  On Friday, December 14th, 2007 the Shelby County Road Department unveiled their new weapon to combat the winter weather in the form of a new salt brine mixer.  Salt Brine solution is one of the key components of the road department’s arsenal that is applied to the roadways as the prep before the snow storm arrives. The salt brine is used an initial treatment to prevent the snow from bonding to the road to allow for easy removal of the snow.

It can applied days before the anticipated snow event, in some cases as long as a week beforehand if no rain is foreseen in the forecast.  Used in addition to the application of salt, salt brine more effectively prepares the roads for snow/ice removal.  Judge Executive Rob Rothenburger states, “Pre-treatment or anti-icing applications to road surfaces results in fewer accidents and helps return roadway surfaces back to normal in a timely manor through a very cost effective method.”

The salt brine mixer is an extremely efficient machine, one which saves the road department time and money.  Carl Henry, Road supervisor stated, “The salt brine making equipment, at the cost of $7,800, can mix approximately 2,000 gallons of brine solution per hour.”  The end product costs approximately 9 cents per gallon to produce.  Twenty-five to fifty gallons of the salt brine solution are required per road mile for proper de-icing application.

The Shelby County Road Department has also developed a regional strategy to assist in distributing salt brine to the city of Shelbyville and Spencer County, to be used in their respective jurisdictions in a cost recovery effort through Shelby County Fiscal Court.
