Earthquake Rouses Community
Several
Shelby County residents awakened early Friday morning, April 18th
to a phenomenon the community hasn’t experienced in several
years. Residents later discovered that it was a moderate
earthquake, with an epicenter 41 miles NNW of Evansville
Illinois that shook the community. The earthquake registered a
5.2 on the Richter scale. It later proceeded to deliver 2
aftershocks, both reaching only 1 on the Richter scale.
Shelby
County Emergency Management Director Charlie Frazee advises,
“The best edge against disasters is to be prepared. Talk to
your insurance agency about obtaining Earthquake Insurance.
This additional coverage is not included in your normal
homeowner’s insurance policy.”
Frazee
reports that there has been no water, gas line, bridge, or any
other damage found in the Shelby County.
Shelby
County Judge Executive Rob Rothenburger states, “Emergency
Management Officials were notified early Friday morning by other
Emergency Services agencies throughout the Commonwealth of
Kentucky of the earthquake. They immediately began checking
with other Emergency Services and utility companies to determine
if any of the county’s infrastructures were compromised in any
fashion. EMA will continue to work with other agencies to
monitor the community to ensure that there is no disruption of
service to Shelby County.”
